How To Choose Calcium Silicate Board? 650°C Vs 1050°C Grades, Density & Asbestos-Free Certification Explained

A cement plant in Egypt ordered calcium silicate board for their preheater tower insulation last year. The spec called for 650°C grade, 250 kg/m³, 50mm thickness - a standard product. The supplier shipped what was ordered. Six months later, the maintenance team opened an inspection hatch and found the board had shrunk and cracked, pulling away from the anchors. The surface temperature at that section was running closer to 700°C during peak kiln operation due to a thin spot in the castable lining behind it. Nobody had accounted for the hot spot, and the 650°C board was simply operating beyond its limit.

Calcium silicate board is a straightforward product on paper. In practice, the difference between a board that lasts ten years and one that fails in two comes down to whether the right grade was matched to the actual service condition - not just the nominal spec. This guide covers how to make that match.

650°C vs 1050°C: When Each Grade Makes Sense

Calcium silicate board comes in two main temperature grades, and the choice is not simply "match the furnace temperature."

650°C grade (Type I) is the standard industrial insulation board. It is lighter, costs less, and covers the majority of applications: pipe insulation, boiler casing insulation, backup board behind refractory linings, and general thermal barriers where the hot-face temperature stays below 650°C. Most industrial steam and hot water pipe insulation uses this grade.

1050°C grade (Type II) - sometimes called high-temperature calcium silicate or refractory-grade calcium silicate - uses a modified formulation that resists shrinkage at higher temperatures. It is specified for applications where the board sits directly behind a thin refractory hot-face lining or where hot spots can push the temperature beyond 650°C. Cement preheater towers, aluminum furnace backup linings, and incinerator secondary chambers are common applications.

Here is the key point many buyers miss: the temperature rating is for the board's continuous exposure temperature, not the furnace operating temperature. If a furnace runs at 900°C but the board sits behind a 100mm castable lining that drops the cold-face temperature to 550°C, then 650°C grade is fine. But if that lining thins locally - or if the board is used as the hot-face material itself - use the 1050°C grade.

Density: Higher Is Not Always Better

Calcium silicate board density ranges from 200 to 300 kg/m³ in standard grades. Higher density gives better compressive strength, which matters if the board will carry any mechanical load. But it also increases thermal conductivity slightly - because denser material conducts more heat - and adds weight to the installation.

For most backup insulation applications, 220-250 kg/m³ is the sweet spot. It provides enough strength to resist handling damage and anchor compression without adding unnecessary weight or cost. Go to 280-300 kg/m³ only when the board will be walked on during maintenance access or when high compressive strength is specified.

The Asbestos Question: Always Ask for Certification

Calcium silicate board manufactured before the 1980s sometimes contained asbestos fibers as reinforcement. Modern calcium silicate board from reputable manufacturers is asbestos-free, using cellulose or synthetic fiber reinforcement instead. But when sourcing from new or unfamiliar suppliers - especially in markets where regulations are less stringent - do not assume.

Ask for a written asbestos-free certification. The certification should reference the test standard (typically ISO 22262 or equivalent) and be issued by a recognized third-party lab, not just the manufacturer's internal statement. Many project specifications now require this as a mandatory submittal, and for good reason - the liability risk of installing asbestos-containing material in a modern industrial facility is not worth taking.

Standard Board vs Custom Shaped Parts

Flat calcium silicate board in standard sizes - typically 1000×500mm or 1200×600mm, thickness from 25mm to 100mm - covers most applications. For pipe insulation, the board is cut into segments or pre-formed into pipe sections by the manufacturer.

More complex applications use calcium silicate shaped parts: custom-machined pieces with holes for burner blocks, curved sections for vessel shells, or interlocking tiles for large flat areas. Shaped parts cost more per unit but save field labor because the cutting and fitting is done at the factory rather than on scaffolding.

If your project has more than 20 pieces that need cutting on site, ask about factory pre-cutting. The cost difference is often offset by reduced installation time, and factory-cut parts have tighter tolerances than field-cut pieces.

What to Check Before Ordering

Verify the temperature rating with your actual cold-face calculation. Do not just use the furnace nameplate temperature. Calculate the temperature drop across the hot-face lining at its thinnest point - usually at corners, penetrations, or areas of known wear - and make sure the board is rated for that temperature plus a 50°C safety margin.

Confirm the board format. Large-format boards (1200×600mm) cover area faster but are heavier to handle. Smaller boards (600×300mm or 500×250mm) are easier to install in tight spaces but create more joints.

Plan for attachment. Calcium silicate board is typically attached with stainless steel studs and washers, or with high-temperature adhesive for lower-temperature applications. The attachment method should be specified before the board thickness is finalized, because thicker board requires longer studs.

Ask about moisture resistance. Standard calcium silicate board absorbs moisture if exposed to rain or high humidity during storage. Some manufacturers offer a water-repellent treatment for outdoor storage or installations where the board may be exposed before the outer cladding goes on. If your project site is in a humid coastal area or has a rainy season during construction, specify treated board or plan for covered storage.

Getting the Right Board for Your Project

The four pieces of information a supplier needs: operating temperature at the board location (not the furnace temperature), required insulation thickness, whether the board carries any mechanical load, and the attachment method.
