Which Alumina Silica Brick Grade Should You Choose for Your Kiln?

Short answer: it depends on the zone, the temperature, and what the atmosphere is doing to the lining. Here's the problem with refractory buying - most buyers pick a grade by price or by habit, then find out six months later the brick didn't match the kiln. An alumina silica brick sounds like one product. It's not. The range runs from SK-32 fireclay at 1,670°C to LZ-75 high alumina at 1,820°C, and the difference between them shows up in service life, not just in dollars. This guide walks you through the grades, what changes when you move up the alumina content, and what to send us for a quote. What Is an Alumina Silica Brick?

Start with the basics. An alumina silica brick is a shaped refractory brick built on two oxides: alumina and silica. The whole alumina-silica family lives under that umbrella - fireclay bricks, high alumina bricks, and mullite bricks. Technically, they're all alumina silica bricks.

What matters is what appears on your purchase order. When buyers write "alumina silica brick", they usually mean one of two things: a fireclay brick holding Al₂O₃ at 30-45%, or a high alumina brick at 48-75%. We make both, plus the semi-silica grades in between. You'll also see the spelling alumina silicate brick in specs and tender documents - same material, same grades. The one number that decides everything is alumina content. Refractoriness, hot strength, price - all of them track it. Bulk density and porosity follow along.

Alumina Silica Brick Grades: What the Numbers Mean

We produce seven standard grades, and they split into two groups that are easy to keep straight. Both spellings - alumina silica brick and alumina silicate brick - point to the same seven grades.

The fireclay group - SK-32, SK-34, SK-36 - covers 1,670°C to 1,710°C refractoriness. SK-32 starts at 25 MPa cold crushing strength with 2.10 g/cm³ bulk density. SK-34 lifts CCS to 30 MPa. SK-36 pushes it to 35 MPa and caps apparent porosity at 23%. All three hold load to at least 1,300-1,400°C under 0.2 MPa, and fireclay's thermal shock resistance is why batch kilns keep coming back to it.

The high alumina group begins where fireclay softens. LZ-48, at 48% Al₂O₃, holds 1,750°C refractoriness and 1,420°C under load. LZ-55 is our volume seller for cement preheaters - 1,770°C refractoriness, 1,450°C RUL, 45 MPa CCS. LZ-65 and LZ-75 step up to 1,790°C and 1,820°C for the genuine hot zones: glass regenerator checkers, kiln crowns, upper transition zones. Their porosity drops to 20-21%, which is how they slow slag penetration.

Standard brick size is 230×114×65 mm - the T3 shape - plus T38/T39 arches, wedges, and custom profiles. We hold ±1 mm on length and ±0.5 mm on width and height, per GB/T 2988.

Warehouse numbers, because they matter: we keep 2,000+ tons of SK-32 through LZ-55 in Qingdao. If your grade sits in that range, it's probably in stock. LZ-65/75 are made to order on a 20-day cycle.

How Alumina Content Changes Service Behavior

Raising Al₂O₃ buys you three things: higher refractoriness, higher strength under load, and a higher bill. That's the trade-off, in one line. For an alumina silica brick, that means reading the grade sheet before you read the price sheet.

At the low end, SK-32 stays stable at 1,400°C in service, though we'd rather you run it below 1,300°C for long campaigns. Fireclay absorbs thermal cycling - the daily heating and cooling in batch kilns - without the cracking you'd expect from a denser brick.

Move up to LZ-48/55 and you get a brick that carries load at 1,420-1,450°C. This is the workhorse range for cement preheaters, lime kilns, and reheating furnace walls. Slag and alkali resistance improve noticeably over fireclay.

LZ-65/75 exists for the places where fireclay softens: glass furnace regenerator checkers, upper transition zones in cement kilns, crowns in ceramic tunnel kilns. The denser structure gives slag less room to get in.

We test every production batch for CCS, PLC, and apparent porosity. Target CCS for LZ-55 is 45 MPa; the average across our last 180 batches ran 51.7 MPa. That margin is why our bricks outlast the budget grades - not by luck, by QC.

Where Alumina Silica Brick Goes in Industrial Furnaces

Cement and lime kilns take LZ-48/55 in the preheater and transition zones; SK-36 handles the calcining zone of smaller lime kilns. Steel plants run SK-34/36 on reheating furnace walls and soaking pits, with high alumina silica brick in the hot zones of walking beam furnaces. Glass furnaces use LZ-65/75 for regenerator checkers and crown back-up layers, where temperature and alkali both run high. Ceramic tunnel kiln crowns, shuttle kiln linings, annealing furnace walls - fireclay SK-32/34 covers most of those duties at the lowest cost. Incinerators and boilers take SK-36 or LZ-48 depending on abrasion. Secondary aluminum furnaces run LZ-48/55 where dross attack stays moderate, with a fireclay alumina silica fire brick backup layer behind the working lining.

One record worth sharing: a glass plant in Egypt swapped imported fireclay checkers for our SK-36. Checker life went from 11 months to 19 months. Same geometry, same kiln, nothing else changed.

How to Choose the Right Alumina Silica Brick Grade

Two questions before any grade decision: what temperature sits at the hot face, and what is the atmosphere doing to the brick?

Here are the temperature rules we actually use. Under 1,250°C, SK-32 is the answer - honestly, you don't need more, and we'd rather you didn't pay for LZ-55. Between 1,250°C and 1,400°C with thermal cycling, SK-34 or SK-36, because fireclay absorbs the daily heating and cooling better than high alumina in batch kilns. Between 1,400°C and 1,500°C with load or slag, LZ-48/55 - this is where high alumina silica brick earns its price. Above 1,500°C, or where alkali is attacking the lining, LZ-65/75, or a mullite brick, which we can quote separately.

Three traps we see constantly. First, buying on refractoriness alone. A brick rated 1,790°C with low CCS crushes under load long before it melts - check RUL, not the melting point. Second, oversizing the grade. A zone at 1,300°C doesn't need LZ-55; SK-36 costs roughly 40% less and lasts just as long. Third, ignoring the firing schedule. A cement kiln and a batch ceramic kiln can both sit near 1,300°C, but the batch kiln cycles daily. Fireclay absorbs that cycling; high alumina wins on sustained load. Tell us your firing pattern, not just your temperature.

For a 1,350°C zone with modest slag, SK-36 covers most cases. That's the question buyers ask us most, and the answer rarely changes.

We keep the numbers public so you can plan. MOQ is 5 tons per grade, and mixed containers are welcome - two tons of SK-34 plus three of LZ-55 in one shipment is normal for us. Indicative pricing, FOB Qingdao: SK-32/34 runs 260-380, LZ-48/55  550-900. Confirm with a current quote - bauxite and magnesite input prices. Lead time is 10-15 days for standard bricks from deposit, 20-30 days for custom shapes. Payment is T/T with 30% deposit and 70% before shipment; L/C at sight works for orders above $20,000. Packing is wooden pallets, shrink-wrapped, seaworthy - 1,000 T3 bricks per pallet.
