The first question your supplier should ask is about your application temperature and regulatory environment. Not all ceramic fiber papers are the same material.

Standard aluminum silicate ceramic fiber paper uses a blend of Al₂O₃ (alumina) and SiO₂ (silica) fibers, needle-punched or wet-laid into a flexible sheet. It handles continuous temperatures up to 1260°C (2300°F) and costs less upfront. Most furnace gasket, expansion joint, and backup insulation applications use this grade. It is widely available and competitively priced from Chinese manufacturers in the Zibo refractory industrial zone.

Soluble fiber paper - sometimes called bio-soluble or low-biopersistence paper - uses calcium-magnesium-silicate chemistry instead of aluminum silicate. Maximum continuous temperature drops to around 1000-1100°C, and the price per kilogram runs 30-50% higher. The trade-off: it meets EU Directive 97/69/EC classification requirements, which matters if your equipment ships to European end users or if your corporate EHS policy requires it.

Thickness and Tolerance

Ceramic fiber paper typically runs from 0.5mm to 6mm in thickness. The number on the spec sheet is the nominal value. What matters more is the tolerance band:

A quality manufacturer holds ±0.1mm on 1mm paper and ±0.3mm on 3mm paper

Cheaper mills may ship 3mm nominal that varies from 2.4mm to 3.6mm across the roll

Uneven thickness causes uneven compression in gasket applications, which means leaks

Ask for the actual thickness variation data from a production batch, not just the nominal spec.

Density

Most ceramic fiber paper is produced in the 180-220 kg/m³ range. Higher density gives better handling strength and longer service life in compression applications. For gasket sealing, push for the upper end - 210-220 kg/m³. For general wrapping and backup insulation, 180-200 kg/m³ is sufficient.

Organic Binder Content (LOI)

This is the spec nobody talks about but everyone pays for later. Ceramic fiber paper uses a small amount of organic binder (usually latex-based) to hold the fibers together in sheet form. That binder burns out during the first heat-up cycle, typically between 200-400°C.

Standard binder content: 6-8% LOI (Loss on Ignition)

Low-binder grades for vacuum-formed or rigidized applications: <4% LOI

If you smell a strong chemical odor during first firing, LOI was likely higher than stated

After binder burnout, the paper loses some mechanical strength. The remaining fiber matrix should still hold its shape if the manufacturer used proper fiber length distribution. Short-fiber paper crumbles after burnout; long-fiber paper stays intact.

Temperature Rating vs Real-World Use

A "1260°C" classification means the fiber chemistry can survive that temperature in a lab test. In a real furnace with thermal cycling, vibration, and occasional flame contact, plan for the paper to perform reliably at about 100-150°C below its rated maximum. If your application runs at 1200°C continuously, order 1260°C-grade paper; if you are at 1300°C, ceramic fiber paper is the wrong product entirely - you need ceramic fiber board or a higher-alumina material.

Why Your Supplier's Location Matters

Ceramic fiber paper is not a commodity like standard office paper, but the raw material supply chain affects both price and consistency.

For smaller trial orders, most manufacturers accept 1-2 roll minimums. Bulk orders typically ship in 20-foot containers, with each container holding roughly 500-800 rolls depending on thickness and roll diameter.

Six Questions to Ask Before You Order

Before you sign a PO, get clear answers to these. They will tell you more about the supplier than any glossy brochure.

What is the actual Al₂O₃ + SiO₂ content, not just "ceramic fiber"? - Should be ≥97% combined for standard grades

What is the LOI and how do you control it batch to batch? - Look for ≤8% with documented consistency

Can you provide thickness tolerance data from the last three production runs? - A factory that tracks this has process control; one that cannot is guessing

Do you offer both standard and soluble fiber paper from your own production? - If they can only do one, they may be trading the other

What is your standard roll size and can you slit to custom widths? - Most factories slit to 1m × 30m standard but should accommodate custom

Can you arrange a sample shipment before bulk order? - A legitimate manufacturer will send a few rolls by air freight or express courier

Ceramic fiber paper pricing depends on four variables: fiber type (standard vs soluble), thickness, density, and order volume. A 1mm standard paper at 200 kg/m³ runs differently than a 3mm soluble grade at 220 kg/m³.
